Content Engineering Creates Consistency, Efficiency — and Efficacy

January 19th, 2015

Content Engineering Creates Consistency, Efficiency — and Efficacy
Content engineering is a complex thing. Content engineers create the infrastructure and its rules. They build them according to their knowledge, their skills and their understanding of the client, the digital context and the goals required. They lay out the guidelines that the content producer must follow.

The result is consistent engagement. When users can rely on a publisher to produce content at a quality and in a format that they find valuable and relevant, they’ll want to keep using it. They’ll look for it and they’ll react to it. They are always informed and in control, enhanced by the content they consume and enjoying a positive brand experience that resonates whenever they interact with the brand.

The content has been planned with their needs in mind, and in addition to creating the content itself, the content engineer has also put in place a system that ensures the content can be produced consistently.

That system could be as simple as determining a particular style and format for the content. Videos might be set at two-and-a-half minutes. Blog posts might be restricted to 500 words, with one sub-heading, three bullet points and a friendly but professional style. But it’s more than that. The system will also allow the brand to produce content that the audience needs and wants, enjoys and expects. Articles that contain exactly the kind of information they want to read and filled with the knowledge and messages that match their life.

The consistency the content engineer’s system has created will produce efficiency. Having created the process and chosen the format, the content engineer will have done much of the preparation work that’s always involved in creating content.

Users will benefit. They’ll have a seamless, familiar experience, believing that they are in the right place, a place that consistently provides them with true value. They’ll know where to go next and what to do with the information they receive. They’ll feel in control, even as they’re being led, until they reach the final point: the call to action.

The efficiency produces efficacy.

Content Engineers Build Engagement
Content engineering is intended to do a number of things. It’s meant to produce consistent content geared towards a particular audience. It aims to make creating that content regular and painless. And it gives a publisher a clear identity with which an audience can identify and that they want to bring into their lives.

It creates the structure on which the content creator — who may or may not be the same person as the content engineer — can hang their creativity.

Above all it’s meant to create content that appeals to the market and win customer engagement.

Content engineering takes content marketing to an entirely new level. Beyond the creation of persuasive words or attractive graphics, it builds entire processes that make content an intrinsic part of a company’s activities. It’s the difference between writing a line of code and planning an entire operating system.
